The Casino

Casino, not a huge fan, however my wife loves the machines. So, we go every six weeks or so. Back in the day I worked in the stewarding department before the casino opened in 80 something. The Stewarding department supplied all crockery, cutlery and the like to the restaurants, function rooms and kitchens. Doing dishes and pot washing using massive machines or just good old fashioned elbow grease. We also kept all the silverware shiny. I had only been there for a week when I was made supervisor. After about six months I was an assistant chief steward. The Chief Steward was a charming Egyptian fellow a lovely man, but a whole other story.

I was on an amazing career trajectory, learning everything I could. Next step Chief Steward in the Burswood hotel, then I could go anywhere as Burswood was linked to hotels all over the world. The Bahamas, London and Europe.

Then Burswood sold the hotel to a Japanese company, and with it my dreams of a hospitality career.

Instead, I finished my hospitality career as assistant Chief Steward at the Burswood Casino, I was bitterly disappointed. Needless to say, I moved on to other opportunities fairly quickly.

The move led to a 30-odd year career in the disability sector, which gave me many opportunities and stories.
